RECOMMENDED: Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix is $1.99! This is a dark comedy/horror novel about a haunted IKEA-esque store. Carrie reviewed the book a few months ago and gave it an A:
Even in the darkest moments, the absurdity of the situation adds some sardonic humor. It’s hard not to giggle at a line like “They nailed me inside a Liripip” or a scenario in which someone’s survival depends on disassembling cheap furniture with one of those weird Allen wrench things.
Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring wardrobes, shattered Brooka glassware, and vandalized Liripip sofa beds – clearly someone, or something, is up to no good. To unravel the mystery, five young employees volunteer for a long dusk-till-dawn shift and encounter horrors that defy imagination. Along the way, author Grady Hendrix infuses sly social commentary on the nature of work in the new twenty-first-century economy.
A traditional haunted house story in a contemporary setting, and full of current fears, Horrorstör delivers a high-concept premise in a unique style.
The Tycoon’s Socialite Bride
The Tycoon’s Socialite Bride by Tracey Livesay is 99c! This is a contemporary category romance and the first book in the In Love with a Tycoon series. Readers loved the modern marriage of convenience story. However, some reviewers wanted more momentum in the story.
To avenge his mother’s mistreatment at the hands of her upper-crust employer, self-made real estate tycoon Marcus Pearson needs entree into their exclusive world. When D.C. socialite Pamela Harrington comes to him for help, Marcus realizes the golden admission ticket he’s been seeking has suddenly fallen into his lap.
Pamela will do anything to save her favorite cause, even agree to a marriage of convenience. The altruistic “it-girl” isn’t worried about the pretend passion with Marcus turning real; she’s sworn off powerful, driven men who use her for her family’s connections.
So she’ll deny the way her pulse races with one look from his crystalline blue eyes. And he’ll ignore the way his body throbs with each kiss from her full lips. Because there’s no way he’ll lose his blue-collar heart to the blue-blooded beauty.
Love’s Revenge by Joan Avery is 99c! This is an American historical romance with an off-limits/forbidden romance between the hero and the sister of his late wife. (Unless I read the description wrong.) Readers were really taken with the hero and his emotional arc. However, others said the beginning of the book takes some powering through.
St. Louis, Missouri, 1879
Heiress Kate Barker thought she’d met the man of her dreams the night the mysterious English viscount swept her off her feet at the masquerade. Until his real identity is revealed—the cold, calculating scoundrel is really there to rip her world apart.
The only things that have kept widower Stephen Worth alive for the past two years are the promise of revenge against the man who framed him for murder and the love for Andy, his son, who was taken by the beautiful but vexing sister of his dead wife. He didn’t know what to expect when he met Kate, but it wasn’t undeniable desire.
Torn by attraction, driven by hatred, tempered by their love for a child, Stephen and Kate fight their growing feelings across the country to the wilds of Colorado. If he cannot convince Kate to trust him before she learns the truth about his past, he could lose Andy—but his demons are all the ammunition she needs to keep the boy for good.
Crashed Out by Tessa Bailey is 99c! This is the first book in the Made in Jersey series. Book two is also on sale and book three features a plus-size, husky hero. This one seems to reverse some common tropes, with the hero being the younger brother of the heroine’s best friend. The heroine is a blue collar worker and seven years older than the hero.
Jasmine Taveras is the reason Sarge Purcell grabbed his six-string and bailed the hell out of New Jersey four years ago. She’s the fuel for every song he’s ever written-each one laced with bitter, hard-edged, hungry lust. Now, with his hugely successful band on temporary hiatus, Sarge is determined to prove to Jasmine that this “kid” turned into every inch the man she’s always needed…
Men are slim pickings for a single factory girl in Hook, New Jersey…until tall, broad-shouldered hotness walks-or rather storms-into Jasmine’s life. Sarge’s return shouldn’t affect her this way. He’s her best friend’s much younger kid brother, and the kind of rough, gritty, sexiness Jasmine has no right to taste for herself. Even if he lets her.
But lust is a blinding, insatiable force. And when it crashes, it will take both Sarge and Jasmine down with it…
