This HaBO request comes from Quasar, who recently got into reading romance: Awhile back I read (or listened too – I’m half sure I listened to it) a contemporary romance book for which I cant remember the author title or cover. All I remember is some plot points and tropes. Here’s what I do remember. The story is about a guy (whose occupation is some kind of building contractor I think) who is married and parent to a daughter. Anyway the wife dies (cant remember how) and in the aftermath his sister in law moves in to help and stays on as a long term roommate and helps raise the girl. Over time she becomes as much of a mother to the girl as her sister was and the two adults fall in love. For reasons I cant remember (though it sticks out) none of the other family is around to see this family unit develop and then I remember the end where the relationship is consummated with a non official wedding in some nature setting involving just the three of them. I also seem to recall the sister in law taking up the role of a swim coach for…

The Right Swipe RECOMMENDED: The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai is $1.99! Maya read this one and gave is an A: The Right Swipe is an amazing, well written story about two people of color falling in love as they come to terms with how the physical, psychological, and emotional traumas they experienced continue to affect them both. It was also, for me, a quiet little moment where I felt my existence was acknowledged. Alisha Rai returns with the first book in her sizzling new Modern Love series, in which two rival dating app creators find themselves at odds in the boardroom but in sync in the bedroom. Rhiannon Hunter may have revolutionized romance in the digital world, but in real life she only swipes right on her career—and the occasional hookup. The cynical dating app creator controls her love life with a few key rules: – Nude pics are by invitation only – If someone stands you up, block them with extreme prejudice – Protect your heart Only there aren’t any rules to govern her attraction to her newest match, former pro-football player Samson Lima. The sexy and seemingly sweet hunk woos her one magical night… and disappears. Rhi thought she’d…

We are the hollow (wo)men We are the stuffed (wo)men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Alas! Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass or rats’ feet over broken glass In our dry cellar Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion; “The Hollow Men,” T.S. Eliot, 1925 (edits mine) Oh, hey, look. T.S. Eliot predicted the current RWA “board!” I use quotes because I can’t fathom the complete lack of leadership, awareness, or comprehension they’ve displayed in the past few weeks. February 2020 is looking to be as long as January 2020 in RWA-time, so let’s catch up. I’m tired already. As of this morning, 11 February 2020, resignations of RWA membership are being posted, shared, and tweeted. I’m a little surprised that “RWA Resignation” isn’t trending nationally. Much of the anger that has resurged is due to past RWA president Leslie Kelly sharing that she has resigned from RWA after offering to serve as assistant to past president Dee Davis to re-establish the Leadership Development Committee: 1) Today, after 20 years of membership in @RomanceWriters, I've tendered my resignation from the organization. Sadly, the RWA I…

HaBO: Regency Series Where Brothers Marry Sisters (Not Theirs!)

This HaBO is from Kassi, who is looking for a Regency romance series: I’m having a hard time finding a Regency series I read in the 2010-2011 time frame. I’m not sure when the books were written, but recall that there were 4-5 books in the series. I only really remember 2 of 5ish pairs of characters well. The series started off with a heroine in family trouble- money problems, a disgraced family name (father/step father/uncle was possibly some sort of traitor?), lots of siblings to care for, getting blackmailed into something, etc… I don’t remember much from that story, but in the 2nd or 3rd, the brother of the hero from book 1 falls for the sister of the heroine from book 1. The heroine of book 2/3 is of the wallflower variety and has a vision or eye affliction (or maybe it’s headaches) and wears green tinted lenses to help her see. The hero is a grumpy, self-conscious, war vet, recent amputee (leg from the knee down) and finds the heroine’s green specs totally attractive. The other pairing I remember well from the series was from the last book and I believe the heroine was the youngest half…

B+ Freaky in Fresno by Laurie Boyle Crompton February 11, 2020 · Blink HumorYoung Adult Freaky in Fresno is a blast. It’s a YA with a lot of romance, but the focus is more on family and friendship, so we’re talking more rom-com than romance novel. In this book, two cousins who were raised like sisters but have grown apart, switch bodies Freaky-Friday style. What ensues involves romance, make-up, an angry chihuahua, wolf dogs, classic horror movies, and a very beautiful car. I loved it, although it was a little too fluffy for an “A” grade. Ricki works for the Starlight Drive-In Theater. She loves horror movies and horror cosplay and has a crush on her coworker, Jake. Ricki resents her glamorous cousin, Lana, believing that Lana ditched Ricki as soon as Lana became obsessed with makeup and fashion. Lana is a BubeTube channel star who specializes in make-up tutorials. At first, I thought “BubeTube” was a joke of Ricki’s but no, that’s its name. Anyway, Lana has a fake relationship with another star, named Erik (contrived for publicity), who she does really like (unbeknownst to him). Lana is being managed by her ambitious mom and, in contrast to the…

If you don’t want to miss a single staring nipple, creepily gazing at you from a book cover, don’t fret! You can sign up for the SBTB Daily Digest – our once-a-day (hence: daily) newsletter that emails the newest content every day (see? daily!) around 12pm ET. So if you’re in need of a bit of Cover Snark to get you through the afternoon, you won’t miss a nip, I mean, I thing. I set up the SBTB Daily so that you receive the newest content, and you get the entire post – no excerpts. This is contrary to a LOT of advice about RSS newsletters, let me tell you. The theory, I believe, is that a newsletter should drive traffic back to the site, so an excerpt should tempt readers to head over to the HQ for the rest of the mayhem. Now, I do like when you visit, and I love that our traffic increases month-to-month (that helps keep us in business), but I also want subscribers to, you know, get the SBTB content they’re looking for. So if you subscribe, you get the entirety of our newest content, including that day’s Books on Sale. In fact, we time the…
