Sleeping Giants RECOMMENDED: Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel is $1.99! It’s a scifi novel with some great female characters. Readers say that though this scifi is a little darker and less “feel good,” they loved it. However, some felt a bulk of the book was just setup and information dumping for the next book. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads. Elyse enjoyed this one and I really loved the audiobook. Sleeping Giants is a thriller fueled by an earthshaking mystery—and a fight to control a gargantuan power.   A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top secret team to crack…

They aren’t part of a connected series, but Henry has done retellings of Alice in Wonderland, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan. This one retells Little Red Riding Hood where a young woman tries to get to her grandmother’s house following an outbreak of deadly pandemic. It’s dark, character driven, and full of fucked up-ness in the best way. However, Red is the focus and if you’re the type of reader who wants to know all the answers, you might be left disappointed. I’ll spoil it right now and tell you that: Show Spoiler We never figure out where the outbreak came from, methods being taken to combat it, or any related sciencey details. Let me first address the context of some of the content warnings above. Red is a biracial, bisexual twenty-year old woman. Her Black mother is a college professor of Shakespeare and I believe her White father is also an academic. At…
